Spring 2015 TEL3M Independent Study Projects (ISPs)

For the bulk of your formal education you have been, and will continue to be, required to consume curriculum chosen for you by someone else. Fortunately (hopefully) you will put this knowledge and skill to good use in your future. However, jumping through someone else's hoops alone does not, typically, entitle you to future success. For that, you must demonstrate your own initiative, motivation, and passion. These qualities need to be cultivated and our Grade 10 hardware course is a perfect place to start. There is so much to learn and there are so many great projects out there that offer stimulating contexts within which to develop, challenge and refine your interests.

ISP Proposal. We are at the halfway point in this course. There is sufficient time to research, identify, and undertake a project that interests you. Your kit is filled with interesting components, electronic parts are available all over the city and online, and there is an internet filled with ideas and outlines for projects.

Task.

  1. By Saturday April 18 you are asked to have downloaded, completed, and attached the ISP Proposal Form (Word document) to an email to handin under the Subject Line: ISP Proposal.
  2. Since you are to submit this electronically as an attachment to an email, you should remove the line leaders in the document and type in your responses in a font or face different than the one I use.
  3. I will copy each of your Descriptions and assemble them in the table below so you can see, from the outset, what your peers have elected to undertake.
  4. Finally, a random selection of your peers will evaluate your project during your Presentation undertaken in the final few classes. Here are the criteria they will use to assess your effort.

The characteristics of a great project include such aspects as imagination, creativity, a degree of risk and, sometimes, even simplicity, to name a few. Remember that flashlight circuit 'board' the guy made out of little more that a piece of paper and a pencil? Simple, but inspiring. So, starting this weekend, dig in, think, research and explore possible project pursuits. Be discerning: don't accept the first thing that comes along.

You'll be expected to summarize your project in your ER so have your phone handy to capture the images of your journey.

Independent Study Projects. The table below includes the ISP proposals of your peers.

# ACE Project Description Risk Factor
(out of 10)
1 SA Multi-Coloured Lantern

The lantern would have have many LEDs and a dimmer that could change the brightness of the LEDs. Also it would have switches that would make the lantern change colour.

2 PBa Digital Etch-A-Sketch

The project will use two potentiometers, an Arduino and a computer screen. With these items, I will be able to use the two potentiometers (a 50KΩand a 100KΩ potentiometer) to create lines on the screen. This will be done through Processing.

3 NB Motion- Sensitive Alarm
Using the alarm feature in my kit I plan to build an alarms that goes off when motion goes through a certain point

4 PBe The Portable USB Charger

It will be a portable USB charging box with the ability to charge something such as an iPod or a phone.

5 SB The Clapper
Imagine, it’s 3:00 in the morning; you need a drink of water but can’t find the door. Luckily, the clapper is sitting on your bedside table; you clap your hands and on goes the light for a few brief seconds. Now you can find your way out of the room without falling to the floor and breaking every last bone in your body. The clapper is a light that turns on when triggered by a loud (piercing) noise; such as a clap.

7 JB Solar Powered Phone Charger
For this project, I hope to be able to create a charger for my iPhone 5 using a homemade circuit, a project box, and many parts from the engineering box.  However some parts, like the solar panel that will be used to recharge the batteries will have to be bought.  I hope to only have to buy a few additional parts.

8 GC Whack A Mole
The project will be very similar to the famous arcade game “whack a mole”. LED will light up and you have to press the corresponding button to turn off the light. If you run out of time, you lose.

9 TD Electric Motor
The goal of this project is to create a working spinning electric motor using raw components. I will design and build a motor that will spin as fast as i can manage using only parts I can find around the house or in local hardware stores. I will research the theory of motors and how they are made in order to improve the overall function of my motor and its design.

10 MD FM Transmitter
For my project I am making a very simple FM Radio Transmitter. This transmitter will take output from an iPod and transmit it up to 10m. Inspiration

11 AE Laser Tag Gun and Vest

It will consist of a vest or shirt and a gun that shines IR light on the sensor and when it hits the vest it will let the current pass through and light up a LED. Inspiration

12 OG EMP Generator An EMP generator is a weapon that creates and releases and electro-magnetic pulse, which can destroy electronics within a certain radius.
13 BG Metronome

This is a metronome, it creates a steady stream of beeps. Inspiration

14 JH Fishing Rod Alarm

When needed a fisherman can be awoken to set the hook on a fish. A flex sensor goes off whenever the rod is bent an alarm will go off.

15 KL

Crystal Radio

A simple AM radio using a germanium diode connected to an amplifier and speakers to make a audible sound.

16 AL Ping Pong Launcher It would have two rotating devices that would spin. I could place a ping pong ball that would be launched by the rotary machine. I would add in a potentiometer to adjust the rotating speed.
17 AT iPhone USB Charger A USB charging port that can be used to charge iPhones, iPods and other electronic devices using an USB charging cable.
