public class Mandelbrot

This applet class was developed as our entry into the University of Toronto's 2009 Showcase Fair. It incorporates fixed point mathematics routines to render the images as quickly as possible by avoiding floating point calculations. In addition, colour selections from the palette are made with the help of the Normalized Iteration Count Algorithm (NICA) to avoid the dramatic banding that detracts from the overall appearance.

Dynamic orbits can be turned on to reveal a sense of the dynamic behaviour that lies at the heart of the Sets.

Method Detail

init

public void init()
Initializes the applet. Creates the palette and the GUI interface.

createPalette

public void createPalette()
Creates a sinusoidal palette, which allows for smooth colour transitions in the fractal. The method fills an array with various integer values representing different colours. The drawJulia and drawMandelbrot simply accesses one of the colours before painting a pixel.


createGUI

public void createGUI()
Constructs the GUI interface. There are three panels, the mandelPanel, the juliaPanel and the controlPanel. The mandelPanel is where the mandelbrot is drawn, julia is drawn in the juliaPanel and all the buttons are located in the controlPanel.


paint

public void paint(java.awt.Graphics g)
The initial paint method. Paints the mandelbrot and the basic julia set. Called during initialization.
